Recruits for 2011-12
7/17/11
High school center
Ryan Van Pelt, 6'10" 210 pound forward/center from Orem, Utah, will join the WSU men's basketball team this Fall. Van Pelt played his senior season last year at Timpanogos High School.

Van Pelt was a First Team All-Conference player as a senior and was also a First Team All-Valley selection. He was an All-State player as well named to the Deseret News Honorable Mention 4A All-State Team. He averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game and led his team to the Utah State 4A playoffs. AAU: Utah Pump N'Run.

Schools of Interest: Weber State.

11/8/10
High school guard
Gelaun Wheelwright, 6'1" 175 pound guard from Corona, CA, will play his senior year at Centennial High. Wheelwright committed to USC in July of 2009 and then decommitted from USC in August of 2010. ESPN Recruiting rates Wheelwright as an 86.

ESPN Player Evaluation

Strengths:
Wheelwright has a great frame with excellent length and his athleticism is quite explosive. He pushes the ball well in transition and he can either finish at the rim or pull-up and hit the jump shot (streaky). He has a scorer's mentality and he can put up a ton of points in a hurry. In addition, his handle is quite good when going right and he has a nifty crossover.

Weaknesses:
His decision-making needs an overhaul. It doesn't help that his high school team plays at a reckless pace so forcing the issue comes very easy to him. Although he is tough to stop off the dribble while going to his strong hand (right), his left hand needs to get better. For every nailed jump shot and acrobatic pass there comes a fair amount of turnovers and bad shots.

Bottom Line:
Wheelwright has been one of the bigger enigmas on the west coast. He is blessed with a terrific frame and very good athleticism, but the rest of his game has not come together. Overall, he doesn't have the savvy (yet) to be a D-I point guard. As he comes into his senior campaign it would be nice to see him tighten up his game at both ends and become a more efficient player.
