Off Season Update: Part 1
What exactly happened over the Summer regarding Weber State basketball and the Big Sky Conference? What did we miss? This is part 1 of a 6 article series summarizing the off season which will be ending in less than 2 months with the annual Purple & White on Oct 27.
Regular Big Sky Schedule Is Back!
Due to the economic down turn the Big Sky changed all sports to playing games on back-to-back nights to cut costs last season. Prior to last season the normal schedule would be to have games played on Thursday and Saturday. The 2009-10 basketball season saw games on Friday and Saturday night for conference games.
Overall the teams and coaches didn't like this new format but it had its pro's and con's with the fans. Weber State saw an attendance improvement from 2008-09 to 2009-10. Notably games played on Friday had higher attendance at the Dee than those played on Thursday in 2009. Most WSU fans are glad to see the schedule back to normal. The team is also probably glad to have the schedule back to normal after having to bus from Missoula to Bozeman immediately after a game in a snow storm since there was no travel day.
Portland State Banned From Post Season
In early June, OregonLive.com announced the PSU men's basketball program will be banned from all post season play for the 2010-11 season as well they have lost 2 scholarships.
The ban was due to poor academics. PSU's APR (Academic Progress Rate) was 865 which was below the national average of 940 on the 1,000-point scale. A score of 925 is the NCAA minimum to avoid penalties.
Part 2 of this series will be about WSU's 2009-10 home basketball attendance and how it compared to the rest of the Big Sky and the nation.

Wildcat Wall: Q&A With Kyle Tresnak
Last year Weber State lost center Steve Panos to graduation. And this is Trevor Morris's last year as a Wildcat. We all know and expect Darin Mahoney to be a contributor at the center position this year and next, but who has coach Randy Rahe recruited as the next generation center? The answer is 6'10" big-man Kyle Tresnak. Tresnak, like fellow teammates Byron Fulton and Blake Davis, comes to Ogden from Arizona. It appears that this 225 pound freshman will likely see some playing time as a true freshman this year as well...Read More

Wildcat Wall: Q&A With Scott Bamforth
Weberhoops.com is excited to see what Scott Bamforth, JC transfer out of Western Nebraska CC, will bring to this year's squad. The only JC transfer in this year's recruiting class, Bamforth comes highly touted. Bamforth was planning on playing his sophomore year with Western Nebraska before a season-ending elbow injury prevented that from happening. While this was most likely devastating to him, it can be seen as a positive for the 'Cats. Now, instead of having Bamforth for only 2 years, Weber will have him for 3...Read More

Dee Events Center Upgrades: Pro-Star Vision Screen
The Dee Events Center will have a new look this October at the Purple and White game. Weber State fans' prayers have been answered and dreams have come true. We have a new JumboTron! Jerry Graybeal was a huge part in getting this done. Click here for full size pic.
Although technically the term JumboTron was a registered trademark of Sony, the term is commonly used to describe large screens inside sports stadiums. This is not a JumboTron. Sony debuted its JumboTron at the 1985 Expo World's Fair in Japan. Sony left the JumboTron business in 2001. So who cares about Sony? No one here...3 days before the "black-out" home football game vs Montana, WSU fans will get to see for the first time in action its new Pro-Star Vision Screen.

Weber's new Vision Screen was built by Daktronics (Brookings, South Dakota) one of the world's largest suppliers of electronic signs. Daktronics also is responsible for Stewart Stadium's Vision Screen. Daktronics has been in the electronic scoreboard/screen industry since the late 1960's. The company was started by a couple of Jackrabbit professors at South Dakota State.
Some of Daktronics notable creations include the world's largest video display for sports in 2004 at Jacobs Field (Cleveland Indians). The two HD screens and the world's largest fascia board at Sun Life Stadium (Miami Dolphins) in 2006. The world's largest HD screen at Texas Memorial Stadium (Texas Longhorns) also in 2006. In 2008 Daktronics installed the world's largest HD lighting display at Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City Royals).
Enough history and back to The Dee. Weber's new Vision Screen will feature 4 HD LCD screens, an all LED display around the screens and a Pro-Add LED Display Ring on top. The front panel of the scorer's table will be another Pro-Add LED Display. Both the ring and the scorer's table will be full-color full-motion LED fascias. Also, The Dee will feature a new scoreboard behind each basketball hoop. Both are LED displays unlike the old bulbs in the previous scoreboards and JumboTron.
Last but not least, the basketball standards will have new three-sided shot clocks which will include the running game time. The old shot clocks were one-sided and didn't have the game time.
The Vision Screen will have replay capabilities and WSU fans will actually be able to know what they looking at unlike the past. It is even possible that all 4 screens and both LED fascias can simultaneously be showing something different.
It is expected that the Vision Screen will be raised up this week. Afterwards, the court will be resurfaced and ready to go for our two-time defending Big Sky Conference Champions. Go Weber!

Wildcat Wall: Q&A With Blake Davis
It has been almost two years since redshirt freshman, Blake Davis, committed to come to Ogden to play for Coach Randy Rahe and the Wildcats. Now that his redshirt year is over, he is anxious to get out on the court and show Wildcat fans he belongs on a Division I court. And should he catch Rahe's eye, he may very well get good minutes on the court this year....Read More

Wildcat Wall: Excited To See The New Additions
I know that it is August and that I should be getting all geared up and excited about football season. And I am excited for football, but mostly because when it's football season, that means we are just a few short months away from watching Lillard and Co. take the court again and make another run at a Big Sky title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament...Read More

Official Basketball Schedule Released
WSU Athletics has officially released the basketball schedule for the 2010-11 season. The highlights of the schedule are Seattle and BYU at home with a BracketBusters game possibly at home as well. The 'Cats will travel to play Utah, Utah State and SUU. Similar to the 2008 and 2009 seasons WSU will start things off with a game against the Aggies (Nov 13). In late November, from the 25th to 27th, WSU will compete in the 2010 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, an 8 team tournament. WSU will play host Alaska-Anchorage on the 25th and then take on either Arizona State or Houston Baptist on the 26th. The third night will be the championship/consolation games.
Big Sky play will begin with WSU heading to Montana for the New Year's Holiday. The 'Cats will play at Montana State on Dec 29 at 7 PM and at Montana on Dec 31 at an undecided time which may give the team a chance to get home before midnight.
All Big Sky games will resume the traditional Thursday/Saturday format fans are accustomed to. Last season the 'Sky scheduled all conference games on Friday/Saturdays to help cut costs.
When Big Sky play gets underway, Weber will play 3 away games before its first home game and 5 of its first 7 on the road. Then WSU will be back at home for 4 games and a total of 5-of-6 games at home in a 19 day stretch.
On February 19th WSU will play in its second ever ESPNU BracketBusters game which could be a home or away game. The announced pairings will take place in early February. Weber's other BracketBusters game was an 80-66 loss on February 19th, 2005, at Boise State. Of the 98 team pool last season, 11 games were nationally televised.
