Montana Ends 6 Game Losing Streak to WSU
Montana 75, Weber St. 61
Associated Press
MISSOULA, Mont. -- Anthony Johnson scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and surging Montana topped league-leading Weber State 75-61 in Big Sky play Friday night.

Johnson sank 12 of 14 free throws in the second half. Montana enjoyed a 21-for-28 outing from the foul line for the game. The Wildcats made just 10 trips.

Ryan Staudacher provided the shooting touch for the Grizzlies (16-7, 7-4), who have won six of their last seven and snapped an six-game losing streak to Weber State.

Staudacher hit five 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. His 3-pointer with 5:14 left gave Montana a 68-52 after Weber State had closed within eight on a 9-0 spurt. Will Cherry added 14 points.

Damian Lillard scored 24 points to lead the Wildcats (14-8, 8-2). Lindsey Hughey and Franklin Session had 12 apiece.

Weber State had beaten the Grizzlies 64-56 last month.

Wildcat Wall Blog Interview With Franklin Session
Wildcat Wall is a fan blog on WeberHoops.com with articles written by Mark Berger and Rod Eyre.

New Fan Favorite, Franklin Session
February 3rd For three years Daviin Davis's style of play made him a fan favorite. He blocked shots, he dove for lose balls, and he dunked like no other. When he graduated last year, I wondered who would step up and take his place as the fans' favorite.

This year there is no doubt who holds that honor. Franklin "The Blur" Session.

Listed as 6'2" and 175 pounds, no one on Weber State's active roster is smaller than shooting guard Franklin Session. However, if you look at Session's statistics, it is clear that no one plays bigger. Session leads the team in rebounds and steals. He is number two on the team in assists, blocked shots and minutes played. (In conference play he is actually #1 in all these categories!) Oh, yeah. The dude can dunk as well!

Of all the players on the court he shows the most emotion, much to the pleasure of the fans. Often after a big dunk, a blocked shot, or any other big play, Session looks to the student section and waves his arms or thumps his chest, bringing fans to their feet in applause.

In short he has become a fan favorite because he is fast, athletic, enthusiastic, emotional, and he always gives one hundred percent effort.

WeberHoops.com caught up with him and was able to ask him a few questions.

Q- You have quickly become an obvious contender for Fan Favorite. What do you think about that?
A- "I don't know about fan favorite. Damian is pretty favorable lol..."

Q-You are often the smallest player on the court. What is your secret to getting so many rebounds and blocked shots?
A- "I just play hard as possible every possession, and I can tell where rebounds are going to end up, and I just go get them!"

Q-I have noticed that you now do the jump balls at the beginning of games. How did you get that assignment?
A- "I got that assignment because when we went into the 3 OT game at Idaho State we needed the first possession in every OT, so I ended up winning them and they decided to just keep me at the jump balls now."

Q-I know the student section really likes you because you acknowledge them after a big play. How important are the fans and the student section for you and the team?
A- "The student section and the fans are a big part of where our energy as a team comes from, especially me. I feed off the student section and fans because it just takes my game to another level...so to me the fans and student section are much needed and very important!!"

Q-You mention on a Facebook status that you really want a championship ring. How big would it be to win the Big Sky title?
A-Winning the Big Sky title would be one of the biggest accomplishments in my life! Especially since I have wanted a ring that big since high school lol..."

Fri: Sac State at Weber
On Friday night, WSU, now 25th ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25, will attempt to win its 5th straight game and 6th straight against the Hornets of Sacramento State. This week's lone matchup is the 17th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Hornets in Ogden. WSU is 4-0 at home in Big Sky games and Sac is 0-4 in Big Sky road games.

The Hornets have only one win in Ogden and just four wins overall out of the 32 all-time games. All four of Sac's wins against Weber have come in the last seven years. In 2005-06 (one of the eight worst seasons in WSU history) Sac State and Portland State both got their only win in Ogden to date, and after the Hornets won they were so excited they even took the game ball home.

WSU head coach Randy Rahe is 6-1 overall against the Hornets. Sac State's head coach Brian Katz is 0-3 vs Weber and was a first year DI coach last season. Katz spent 19 seasons in the JC rankings all in the state of California. He spent 15 years prior to Sac at San Joaquin Delta JC in Stockton, CA. At San Joaquin Delta Katz went 348-138 (79%). The 4 years prior to San Joaquin Katz was the coach at Lassen JC where he posted a 87-47 (65%) record. Overall he was 435-185 (70%) at the JUCO level.

Mid-Major Top 25
CollegeInsider.com's top 25 poll now in its 11th season of existence is a poll for the 25 best teams from the mid-major conferences. This year's first poll was released in October with no Big Sky teams ranked but 4 had votes to be ranked: Weber State 50; Montana State 9; Portland State 9; Montana 4.

With Northern Colorado surprising many by starting the season going 7-0, it quickly caught the attention of the Mid-Major voting panel. UNC is now 17-4 overall and ranked 10th. Weber State after starting the season with 50 votes was no where to be found after starting the season 0-3. Now that WSU is 7-1 and sitting on top of the Big Sky voters are respecting the Wildcats. WSU along with 4 other schools went from being unranked to cracking the top 25. Interestingly WSU didn't even have a single vote to be ranked just last week while Montana has spent the whole season with votes.

The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.

WSU's 2009 team finished ranked 20th in the Mid-Major. The last week of the regular season the Wildcats had 5 votes to be in the AP Top 25 before falling to Montana State in the Big Sky Semifinals. The 2007 team led by David Patton finished ranked 25th. In 2003, WSU finished the season in the top 10 (No. 30 in the AP Poll). The last WSU team to finish in the AP Top 25 was the 1980 team which finished 17th.

VOTING PANEL: Randy Bennett (St. Mary's), Will Brown (Albany), Rick Byrd (Belmont), Dave Calloway (Monmouth), Kermit Davis (Middle Tennessee), Steve Donahue (Cornell), Anthony Evans (Norfolk State), James Fox (Davidson), Mike Gillian (Longwood), Steve Hawkins (Western Michigan), Dick Hunsaker (Utah Valley), Eddie Jackson (American), Kerry Keating (Santa Clara) *, Billy Kennedy (Murray State), Tod Kowalczyk (UW-Green Bay), Jim Larranaga (George Mason), Jim Les (Bradley), Mike Lonergan (Vermont), Bob Marlin (Sam Houston State), Gregg Marshall (Wichita State), Tom Moore (Quinnipiac), Jimmy Patsos (Loyola MD), Tom Pecora (Hofstra), Vann Pettaway (Alabama A&M), Rick Scruggs (Gardner-Webb), John Shulman (Chattanooga), Brad Stevens (Butler), Gary Stewart (UC Davis), Scott Sutton (Oral Roberts), Wayne Tinkle (Montana), Ernie Zeigler (Central Michigan)
